  Other platforms have libshadow, and require it for accessing
/etc/shadow.

  If gentoo doesn't want people to use libshadow, they shouldn't have
installed it.  This indicates that they didn't think through the
issues involved.

  Hmm... part way through the bug report log, they "discover" that
binaries necessary for local authentication are linked against
libraries in /usr, which is often NFS-mounted, and thus may not be
available.  This issue has been known in Unix for 20 years: it's why
there's /bin, and /usr/bin.  <sigh>
