Because I use it in several scripting setups... Of course I am only 1 vote, but for the size it gives good functionality, and it allows my scripts to interface with web-site data I would otherwise not have access to, without having to rewrite the scripts... I do not know whether elinks could be used as a drop-in replacement, so I cannot comment on that...
