Can you check out the current CVS and try again please?  There's been a
recent flurry of sound-related commits.

Hmm.  That 'pop' is probably the PCM system being opened.

I do have another suggestion -- try the adlib emulator.  If you get
sound out of it, then the problem's definately MIDI-related.  It may
help narrow the problem down, if nothing else.
