The plot thickens.

When using alsa, apparently the soundserver itself is blocking, so it
can't play notes or anything.  We block on the select() call in
sound_unix_get_command() in polled_ss_unix.c.  Lovely!

As an aside, the SDL soundserver doesn't work right now.
