I have a *wireless *mouse which lasts for more than 6 months on 2 AA
batteries. This mouse has 5 buttons, a LED and a 2-axis scroll wheel. I'm
sure a lot of engineering was put on the power usage problem, but this
shows that there's absolutely no need for draining much power.
For example, the Idle current on the $4.40 Atmega32u2, an AVR
microcontroller which has USB support, is ~250uA@1MHz, with as little as
4.6uA on Power-down. Probably add a little for the USB peripheral.
For simplicity's sake and easy hardware implementation and availability,
I'd go for I²C support. I2C is widely available on most microcontrollers
and is very simple to use, allowing hot-pluggable low-speed multimaster
communications. It was even used on Nintendo Wii's controllers to allow
pluggable accessories. To implement it, a $1.18 Attiny25V will do (some
other microcontrollers may even be cheaper), which uses ~60uA@100KHz on
Idle. This is more than enough to operate some buttons. I'd personally go
for the $1.77 Atmega48PA, with 7uA@128KHz/2V on Idle, including the
Internal RC Oscillator.
