Good to see the initial problem has resolved itself for you.

Re when Serial PTT control is asserted by freedv-gui, on balance I'm OK
with the current operation - ie PTT control is only assumed after Start
is pressed.  However I would be happy to hear other opinions - in
particular anyone that is experiencing practical problems with the
current design.

Sure, if you want to modify the grayed out behaviour of the PTT Dialog
check boxes as described below please feel free to raise a Github PR.

I'm unclear on the change you are suggesting in the final two
sentences. Perhaps it might be easier to post a PTT Dialog screen shot
in the Github PR to illustrate what it might look like.
