Sorry, I confused myself there :) I meant that we /could/ do it with a
folder skin, but it would be better to do it  in the skin itself.

How about using the config.DIR_RECORD; check if the directory is
DIR_RECORD and if it is, use the "recording" skin. That's probably the
simplest way without changing the main menu and adding a whole new
thing to it.

Yes, that's what I was going to do (have record_daemon.py dump info
from the TV guide into an fxd file)

I still haven't thought of a nice way to do it though. I don't think
we should reserve space on the side like we do in the music and movie
menus...
