No problem. So for popcorn I skip the pixel-aspect idea and go back to
the user to provide the monitor aspect in a config file. And I try to
get the real fullscreen resolution from the display.

What happens if we play in a small window (output somewhere on the
screen)?

It works for mplayer with black bars for me, at least when using the
software scaler.
