I could not get AC3 passthrough to work via an SB Live with OSS drivers; the only way to get it to work (for me) was to switch to ALSA at which point it became remarkably simpler. Basically, build and install the ALSA drivers and unmute the coax/optical output you use and then mplayer was able to use it without problems.
