Can you tell me where abouts on the alsa website that you found out how to do it?
Even if your ctl file is incompatable with my alsa driver (0.93c I think) it will still give me a good starting point.
The documentation on how to do this doesn't jump out at me from their site.

Thanks
Graeme

It actually varies based on the machine. Also, I'm still using Alsa
0.90rc1 because it works, and frankly, Alsa changes so much between
revisions that I haven't got the time to work around it. I probably
won't reconfigure alsa until kernel 2.6 is out and I have to :)

You can have my alsa ctl file if you'd like, but unless you're on the
same version, I can't promise it'll help much.

I could not get AC3 passthrough to work via an SB Live with OSS
drivers; the only way to get it to work (for me) was to switch to ALSA
at which point it became remarkably simpler. Basically, build and
install the ALSA drivers and unmute the coax/optical output you use
and then mplayer was able to use it without problems.

Thanks I've installed ALSA and the audio output works OK. I'm new to ALSA, could you email me the config files to get it to do SPDIF passthrough?

Thanks
Graeme
