Two seperate problems you're seeing here. 1. To play video on a DXR3, mplayer has to encode it into mpeg1/mpeg2 2. Video is going through memory, CPU, etc. before it goes out
I'm using a Celeron 400 and TV plays fine, but mainly because I have a G400 which does a lot of the word in the video card. If you use the TNT2 you could use tvtime, which I'm hoping will be the default TV output soon since it is much more efficient for TV viewing than mplayer.
