Just a note on lirc -- there is no way to get it to work and install unless 
you do a kernel recompile.  (please correct me if I'm wrong)  All the RPMS, 
DEB files, etc just don't cut the mustard.

I had success with using RedHat 9, recompiling the kernel (the only thing I 
changed in setup was to optimize for i686), installing the new kernel, then 
lirc compiles and installs without a problem.

NOTE:  make sure you do NOT have the lirc RPM installed, or calling the lircd 
daemon will call the wrong instance.

I think that if for no other reason, projects like www.freevix.org are great 
because they can include lirc kernel modules by default.  I really wish that 
the movix project was a bit more compatible with freevo (the author has 
looked I guess, and there are some caveats) because movix does a great job of 
hardware detection across a wide variety of systems.  movix + freevo would be 
quite the killer app/distro.  Perhaps someday. :)
