I didn't have that experience at all on Debian, I have a custom compiled kernel and I just downloaded the lirc package. I would recommend recompiling the modules themselves (which Debian does in the package) but lirc itself shouldn't need to be recompiled since it primarily deals with the drivers themselves, not the raw devices. > I think that if for no other reason, projects like www.freevix.org are great > because they can include lirc kernel modules by default.
