Ok -- That makes sense that the package itself wouldn't need to be recompiled, but yes, the kernel module does. I think that since you have a custom compiled kernel, that's why it didn't choke on compiling the module. (I just downloaded the tarball, compiling lirc itself took all of maybe 2 minutes) Isn't Debian awesome? (I installed Redhat at home, because I don't have broadband there, and I had the CDs for redhat...)
