As far as IR receivers are concerned they will respond to a wide range of
light sources (not just IR - but mostly - depending on the receiver).
They suffer from drift caused by ambient light and interference from most
common
forms of lighting. Thats why IR signals are modulated, to introduce a usable
amount
of immunity.

I've been giving some though to creating an IR system for a COAX
distribution so that I can have a freevo system in my office hidden under
the desk (with all the others) and pipe the video signal round the house via
the COAX (modulated into UHF). This is all acheiveable with cheap
electronics and a pic or two. One thing that strikes me as directly related
to your poweron via IR problem is that I was planning to use multiple
systems piped round the house on different channels so the IR signals would
need to be on seperate channels or all on a common bus, this can be done
with an inteligent IR receiver using PICs to weed out the correct signal and
respond only to that CODE...

If I actually get started on this project (at the moment its all ideas) then
I'll put it on the web for all too see...
