Thanks to all those who commented. Now I'm even more confused than before ;-).

Useability (in terms of the underlying package manegement, not the
GUI) and throughness or availabliity of non-often used packages are my
two main requirements. This is because, lets face it, freevo is not
often supported by any distro. Most small user base application like
freevo or even vdr are often left out of the loop as all these
mainstream distro's are about is providing a nice 'desktop' slash
windows replacement.

That being said, I'd probably like to run x via a vnc session now and
again, this is probably the key driver for me to migrate of gentoo.
To get x to run on gentoo via vnc I need to rebuild from scratch. And
it takes about a week to do so and I just don't have the time.

Tha fact that i'm using matrox hardware kinda means I *have* to
compile the kernal anyway. This in itself is not a joyous thing for
me, especially on a new system as It wlaways takes me about 5 compile
and recover attempts to remember all the 'special' changes I had to
make to get not just my matrox running, but the usb hacks to get my
dvico card's usb remot working, and the special hacks required to get
my usb dvd burner working, and the special hacks to get my dvico dvb
card working also. All of which so far (in the last 2 years at least)
still haven't made it into a mainstream build.

By special hacks, I mean patchs. They all work, mys system doesn't
crash, but I just loath having to them ;-). Sorry for all those
purists who think this is what using linux is all about. For me it's
the ability to give back a little.

Anyhoo, from you comments I take it the current freevo user base
thinks ubuntoo is bloated. Ok this is good to know.

No one voted for it, debian sarge got one vote and slackware got 2. I
won't be using debian as I've heard most of my hardware is even harder
to get going than with a gnereal linux distro. So off to download
slackware. I'm in no hurry now though, as with the above comments
i've pretty much convinced myself I don't have enough time to go
trhough an look for current patchs and all that for all my shitty
hardware :(.

One more question though

Using Tomcat but need to do more? Need to support web services, security?
Get stuff done quickly with pre-integrated technology to make your job easier
