Can't tell you how to do this on ubuntu, try googling with the error message it often find a useful page first time.
BUT first of all type it a the command line and see if you get an error, if you do then you may not have your kernel configured correctly, what you would need is a /dev/rtc (real-time clock) and to be able to read from it. What do you have in ~/.mplayer/config or /etc/mplayer/config, these files can be empty for freevo as freevo is explicit about how they are called. You certainly have setting that enable lirc (remote controller) and the joystick.
