Can't tell you how to do this on ubuntu, try googling with the error
message it often find a useful page first time.

BUT first of all type it a the command line and see if you get an error,
if you do then you may not have your kernel configured correctly, what
you would need is a /dev/rtc (real-time clock) and to be able to read
from it.

What do you have in ~/.mplayer/config or /etc/mplayer/config, these
files can be empty for freevo as freevo is explicit about how they are
called.
You certainly have setting that enable lirc (remote controller) and the
joystick. Both of which you either don't have or haven't set up.
