I did "echo 1024 > /proc/sys/dev/rtc/max-user-freq" as root and got no message, so it appeared to have worked.  That error went away when trying to watch the recording, but it still didn't work.  It's basically the same otherwise I think.

The reason for LIRC is that I have mythtv installed as well and it apparently is a dependency of mythtv because it won't let me remove lirc without the other.  My mythtv doesn't work right either though, can't even watch live tv with it.  My ~/.mplayer/config is empty besides a commented line that says to put default settings there.
