Thank you for that Duncan, it will be a help to have some more events
setup to drive freevo in a more flexible way and at least will mean that
I don't have to live with only a 5min skip backwards.

I don't mean to go on about this, I also know that if xine and mplayer
supported this it wouldn't be an issue. I don't want to start an
argument, just trying to explain why this sort of thing is so important.

I have people who come round and love the idea of the media centre, but
they expect it to behave like an out of the box PVR or an an VCR.

I have a MS media centre remote. And they press rewind and expect it to
rewind just like a normal PVR or VCR would, and they expect skip back to
jump back a large chunk of time. Now the jump back works fine, but
rewind doesn't. Its not a huge thing, but it doesn't work the way people
expect it to.

Rewind is so ingrained as a way to interact with moving pictures on a TV
that its quite a shock to discover it doesn't work. If you are searching
for something rewind and fast forward allow you to view the pictures as
they speed past then play at the appropriate point. Skipping loses that
continuity of the stream, disorientates the user, and makes it harder to
perform the task they actually want to achieve.

Like I said, at the end of the day it isn't a huge thing, but it breaks
peoples expectation of how things should work. Hopefully this is
something that will be fixed in the future by xine or mplayer providing
proper rewind support. Or maybe if this stuff is handled differently in
Freevo 2.0 then it will work there.

The other thing worth noting is that I write user interface software for
a living, so this kind of thing probably bugs me more than other people!
I spend every working day trying to produce software that is as simple
and as obvious to interact with as possible, doing user reviews of the
interface etc. so when I find things like this they really stick out.

In the grand scheme of things they are fairly minor compared with the
function working, but they do make things harder to use and I just
wanted to point that out, in case nobody has before :). I know there
probably isn't anything that can be done to fix this right now, but
maybe in the future it can be. Maybe I'll join the xine / mplayer
mailing list and ask about rewind there too :)
