I have... mod_auth_mysql seems to be configured fine, as I can login
using testname/testpasswd. I ran the build-symlinks.sh script, the VS is
inserted in the database (and shows as 'online' with the green icon).

That one's fixed now... I copied the httpd.conf from my host Apache
install and changed a few things in there... the httpd.conf that freevsd
created for me didn't work at all, but my own does ;-)
