this is a very hardline licensing view, IMHO.
RMS has forced the original author of clisp (don't remember his name) to
switch the license of clisp to GPL.
Anyway, libedit, a Netbsd implementation of most of readline, is under BSD, and

Yes, libedit should be sufficient.
