Just to comment on that Toy Company (and others like it), I believe you're referring
to Toys-R-Us, right? They had bigger issues than programming problems. They also had
fulfillment issues. Quoting an article in the Interactive week:

online toy and video game market over the next five years. The majority of
Toysrus.com's customers are women, and by next year women online are expected to grow
to 45 million and overtake the number of men online by 2002."
There's no piece of software on this planet that could have prevented that problem.
