This company is worth looking at, they are priced below oracle, good DB and
want to penetrate the market.

Subject: Want to be robbed blind by M$ ???
Okay, here's the deal, folks. I'm looking for a suggestion on an alternative
to MS SQL 7 / SQL 2K. Wonder why? Check out this letter we received back
from M$ regarding an inquiry on the proper licensing for SQL 7. This has
pretty severe implications for CF users, and that's us...
With the kind of $ they want ($28k * 4 processors), I can pretty much pick
from any RBDMS on the market, and I'm sure not going to feel chained to M$
for that kind of bread. Does anybody have a good suggestion for an
enterprise RBDMS that isn't going to cost over $100K, i.e., doesn't have a
rake-in-the-cash-now-to-fill-our-Supreme-Court-Battle-warchest pricetag?

Customers are not allowed to use the web server as a multiplexer. The Cold
Fusion Web Server application makes SQL Server calls on behalf of actual
Users. These Users all are required to be licensed. Determining the
appropriate license depends on the type of user and the customers deployment
scenario.
For users who not company employees, vendors or partners:
The customer will need to purchase Internet connector license for each
processor used by SQL Server 7. If the same database server also supports
internal users, the customer will also need to license the server for the
maximum concurrent usage by internal employees, vendors and partners. This
is SQL Server 7 per server mode licensing.
If the Users are exclusively company employees, vendors and partners:
The customer could choose to place the server in per seat mode and purchase
licenses for each employee, partner and vendor. This CAL would license
individual users to access all Microsoft SQL Servers in the environment and
to install a local database server on client machines for off-line use.
In SQL Server 7, we offered an unlimited CAL server version of SQL 7
Enterprise for $28,000. This single server license would support all
internal users, vendors and partners without requiring CAL counting.
In a SQL 2000 scenario, Microsoft has combined the Internet connector
license and per server mode licenses into a PER CPU licensing model. The
customer would purchase SQL CPU licenses for each processor installed on the
database server.
