You know, that's what I thought too, but the message we got that kicked this
off was an internal e-mail reply direct from Redmond. According to them,
(what total baloney), they feel that potential users ARE users, so pony up
the $$$$$. To me, this is criminal; what, do they want us to pay for 5
billion CALs if we open our app up to the world at large? Hah, they feel
that on an *intranet*, any potential user is a user needing a CAL. Nope.
Ain't gonna happen.
Imagine leasing a car from Dodge, and 2 years into the lease they tell you
"Oh, by the way, for 2000, we're introducing a new per-passanger licensing.
Each seat in your Durango, and there are 8 seats total, will cost you
$10,000/year. Even if ony you and your wife ever drive it, well, there are 8
seats, so you need to send in a check for $80,000 or we'll repo your
Durango."
As far as selecting an alternative to MSSQL7, we've got some Cache' pros
in-house, and it looks like we just might make the big jump.
