Very close to home. We've lived with this story for about a decade in BC, but it got the most coverage because of, and following the Robert Picton trial (he who may have murdered, alone or possibly with an accomplice, fifty women whom he met on the lower east side of Vancouver), many whose deaths could have been prevented had police /RCMP done their jobs as reports came through over the years prior. Picton was found guilty of six murders, and there will not be a trial for the remaining others known to have been at his farm site where the murders took place, mostly because of the great public cost to finance scores of cases to achieve the same end. Picton co-owned the pig farm property with a (smarter) brother, who should have been aware of the near overt activities, but was never convicted of either complicity or knowledge of these horrible acts. And since that trial, of course, more women have died or gone missing in the area. It's notorious for some of the most bizarre crimes.

I think that un-nurtured/socially disadvantaged rural upbringings breed a lot of these cowards who prey on local women and children. I don't doubt that race comes into it, given their sad and isolated upbringing. Any organizational aspect to these incidents, I'd guess, would likely be collaborative of only locals. The national connective crime is that authorities are known to be dismissive of reports and investigation calls made by native communities. They're just about native women, often considered to be just drug addicts, hitchhikers, or prostitutes, and not usually of any social standing that would muster the public's interest or sympathy. Now, if this were about a neo-con senator's daughter, that would be different. But cops are the same almost everywhere. Of those who are still caring after being on the force for a while, their better intentions are quickly overcome by the political will of the GOP and their need to pay the mortgage. The better ones tend to get promoted out of active duty to minor supervisory positions.
