There is in any tribal society the notion that the whole tribe is responsible
for proportionate retribution against an offender's clan.

In the US, we have the famous McCoy-Hatfield feud. These vendettas -- for that
is what they become -- can go on for many generations i they are not resolved
through negotiations among the tribal elders.

The Muslim world, in what can be considered an instance of a major social
progress, established negotiation and reconciliation as a pre-requisite to any
resort to an 'eye-for-an-eye' violence -- or even to voluntarily accepted
adjudication.

I did see first-hand an instance of such an honor code writ small: a girl was
gunned won outside the American University in Beirut in 1964 by her brother,
because she had dated someone without her family's consent or male rpesence.
This involved Christian families.

I highly recommend an extraordinary movie to you about this: Before the Rains.
It concerns blood feuds and honor killing in Macedonia, between Christian
orthodox and Muslim clans.

Cheers,
Lawry
