In the book of Genesis, Abraham's wife, Sarah, presumed she was baren and could not give him a son, so she told him to have sex with Hagar, her Egyptian maid servant. He did so, and fathered Ishmael. However, some time after that, Sarah gave birth to Isaac and had Abraham send Hagar and Ishmael packing. Abraham is regarded as the foundation of all three great monotheistic religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. However, Christians and Jews see their descent to Abraham as proceeding through Isaac, whereas Moslems see the descent through Ishmael. Ed Weick
