I'd love to respond to the hard-wired traits but I've got to teach. I do want you to know that my hard-wired computer just sent me a warning that there was a virus within your message.
Sorry to be the bad news messenger,

Ed,Are you saying that large groups cannot make decisions that are ultimately good for the group through temporary self sacrifice?REHThere have been groups like that, religious groups like the 16th and 17th Century Anabaptist movements. However, what happens in most cases is that some part of the group, a leadership elite, takes over and begins to bend the group to its purposes. A heirarchy forms, and whether this is officially recognized or not, a class system develops. The Russian revolution is a good example of this, as is Communist China. I believe that Orwell had it right: Everybody is equal but some are more equal than others. Or, it might be put another way: Everybody is equal until there is a reason to be unequal. I'm readng Pinker right now, and, while I find some of turbid and heavy going, I find his argument that there are traits that are hard-wired into us compelling. I would suggest that some of these relate to class and control. As long as there is no reason for them to show, these do not surface. However, when conditions change, they can emerge full-force.
