The "pauses": Remember that their will be a distinct pause in
cross-Atlantic questioning caused by the use of satellites. We hear a
question, then it takes a perceptible time for it to arrive 3,000 miles away.

This might make a measured response seem more measured!

Well, we're used to seeing these sorts of pauses caused by satellite delay
but Perle's pauses seemed much longer than those.

I must say that Perle has escaped me. I know little about him and if I've
seen him, he didn't make an impression.

I was intrigued because I've heard him mentioned on this list by some FWers
as being some sort of modern Niccol Machiavelli. Now I've seen him I think
they're probably right! (No . . . now that biographical material on Cheney
is now beginning to appear, I rather think that Cheney is the real
Machiavelli. )

Incidentally, where I've changed my mind in recent weeks about the White
House set-up is that I don't think Bush Senior has a great deal of daily
influence on policy despite the frequent phone conversations father and son
are supposed to have. In fact, from what he's said recently, he's
uncomfortable. He's twice said that America must mend international fences.
Privately, he might be very dismayed because sonny is taking no notice. The
damage was really done when Bush Senior bequeathed Cheney, Rumsfeld, Perle
and Wolfovitch to his son.

Incidentally, my view of Bush hasn't changed much in recent weeks even
though we're beginning to know a great deal more about him. He's a bull in
a china shop. His minders set some words in front of him everyday, place
him in the right context, and then let him go. So far he's performed
according to the script. But there's evidence that as well as being totally
insensitive he's a vengeful and choleric man . Karen has just given
evidence that he can be flustered when a critic is sitting nearby. If
things start to go badly for Bush, then I think we might see some real
nastiness coming out in public from this guy. He'll depart from his script
one day at a press conference and supply ample evidence of his unfitness in
full public view.
