I guess the main problem is that utf8 is not fully implemented yet... Maybe you know some more about when this will happen? Could you also give me some tips about how to handle the characters I am having problems with? (æ, ø and å in ISO-8859-1)

You should switch to ISO-8859-15 as the chars you mentioned are not supported within ISO-8859-1. A other way to display these in a page would be to write them in UTF8 notation within HTML.

For internal UTF8...

This will only be done for our internal classes and only for a hand full of them.
We will not support userland UTF8 until PHP6.

The use of the internal UTF8 classes for other purposes can lead to a dramatic reduced speed of the webserver. For example: The strpos function will take 8time more than the php internal class.

But Andr'e can answer better how far he is with the implementation.
