That's really good.  Consider yourself lucky.  ;)

Many of the GUI's out there are either a clone or have been inspired by
another OS.  The default ubuntu theme "clearlooks" was inspired by the
beta versions of Vista.  

Simon mentioned beryl.  If you want to look at some of the beryl stuff,
go look for "beryl" or "compiz" on youtube.com.  Another cool plugin for
beryl/compiz is called "lowfat"

Wine is okay -- it works for many people, but not for all apps.

If you find yourself not being able to live without Illustrator or
Photoshop, I recommend you purchase VMWare so you can run it natively.
Also, if you save a copy of the clean XP VMware image, you can use it
if/when things slow down again.

Or if you're too cheap for to buy VMWare, download the VMWare player
(free) and an empty vmx image from easyvmx.com (also free) and install
XP into that.

There are people out there that would say, GIMP GIMP GIMP... but if
you're used to photoshop, the GIMP just isn't the same.
