1. I have 2 offices with 8 users. An IT guy in TX wrote an app to move data
from their machines to a NAS device. Then a new desktop is put in place and
the app copies the data back to the new machine. Instead of using their NAS
device I wanted to be clever and use a laptop as a NAS. Although XP has a
limit of 5 connections you can only hook up 3 or 4 at the most. By using
FreeNas on VirtualBox one could have all 8 connecting at the same time. Also
by learning to making it work I could wind up with a test machine etc.

2. I wouldn't say I'm committed to Vbox & FreeNAS. An IT guy in Dallas has
his going but something is slightly not right. I think the goal is to run
FreeNAS as a VM in VBox.

3. I'm using a stock corporate image which is necessary to satisfy our
domain needs. XP Pro, etc. 160 GB SATA HD & 3 GB Ram.
3a. Have newest versons of FreeNAS & VBox from the home sites. Have the
FreeNAS ISO on the desktop as that was shown on one of the many YouTubes I
watched. The one I liked best was Cochran's. He mentioned the settings after
defining the VBox drive. Most others left that out. Also, it seems most
people wanted to run Ubuntu under XP type of thing.

4. Installed VBox drive with 10 GB drive (fast to setup) and 1.2 GB Ram.
Have FreeNAS ISO on HD. Mounted CD drive but when I try to install FreeNAS
in VBox get message of not finding CD drive.

5. Fire up XP. Start VBox. Machine in left column. Settings as follows:
System: MB - Base memory 512 MB.
Boot order floppy, CD, Hard Disk
Hard Disks: PIIX3, Enable Additional Controller checked, SATA (AHCI). Slot
is IDE Primary Master but can not be changed. Show differencing HD not
checked.
CD/DVD: Mount CD/DVD Drive checked. ISO Image File points to FreeNAS ISO on
desktop.
Network: Enable Network Adapter checked. Adapter type PCnet-FAST III
Attached to: Bridged Adapter. Name: Inter 82566MM GB ...
Serial ports not used. USB not used.

Click on Start:
VBox starting & booting.
Welcome to FreeNAS - Boots by default.
Console Setup: Choose #9 - Install/Upgrade to HD/Flash etc.
Install & Upgrade:
Choose #3 - Install full OS on HDD+ Data+ Swap but will decline Swap when
asked..
FreeNAS full installer for HDD - ok
Select CD/DVD for install. Only choice is ace0 VBOX CD-Rom/1.0 (ok)
Choose Destination media:
(Select media where FreeNas OS should be installed. Prompt is ad), 10240 MB
VBox HardDisk /1.0> (ok)
Ener the size for OS partition in MB (min128MB). Will choose ok for 128MB.
Want Swap partition? Answer no.

Freenas has been installed on ad0s1.
To use the DATA partition:
Add the disk ad0 on the Disks Management page
Add the mount point on the Disks-Mount Point-Management page
Use the followin parameters:
Disk ad0, Partition 2, Filesystem UFS
Press ENTER to continue.
MigrationIV (server name) Running - Sun VBox.
Choices: Mount cd/DVD-Rom, Unmount Cd/DVD
Mount Floppy
Network Adapters
Shared Folders
Remote Display
Install Guest Additions.

I don't see where to add the disks in disk management with parameters shown
above.

I'll leave it at this point for now. Thanks for any help you can give. I
think I will take the computer Thursday night and see if I can snag some
time there. Where do you live now?
