Some versions of VMWare are free. The full blown ESX is not, VMWare makes their money not from virtualization tools, but from virtualization management tools. For now though it sounds like you are making good progress with VirtualBox, keep pushing with that IMO. As for the IP address, are you needing a static IP or DHCP? Does the FreeNAS operating system see the network interface for your network card?
