These have to be Apples worst machines. I have had loads of them faulty and 
most of them have been the infamous graphics chip problem.

Was wondering whether this was the beginning of it again.

Apple portables have always gotten hot. My wife had an 800mhz one and it 
too got hot but worked fine so I am wondering if this is just expected 
heat.

Just a bit worrying it is in that area. Also I haven't heard the fan kick 
in yet.

I just tested a lot of these from a school. Of the 30 or so I tested,  
only six of them had zero problems. The rest had either power or  
video problems. Some had labels that said, in various descriptions,  
"got very hot, then completely died" which leads me to believe that  
the CPU gave up the ghost.
