Did you run Disk Utility - Check Disk on it.  This laptop would twiddle 
it's thumbs for a long time with very poor performance.  This would 
occur every day at 12 AM so it was triggered by some maintenance 
function.  When I ran Disk Utility it showed up some kind of directory 
error.  Booting off of the DVD-ROM and doing a disk repair fixed the 
directory problem and made the slow down go away.
