I've noticed a lot of times lately that when I'm checking my gmail account in safari, if I leave it logged in for a while, things start getting REALLY sluggish. Other browsers on gmail, no problems (that I've noticed). Even outside of Google, Safari seems to bog things down once in a while. It's gotten to a point where I only use Safari if I absolutely HAVE to. I would suggest using another browser for a while, avoid Safari, and see if the problem recurs.
