Hi, Friends,

I'm about to do brain surgery on my 12" 1.33 GHz PowerBook G4, running
OS 10.5.7, to replace both the defective optical drive, and to replace
the 'book's 150 GB HD with a 320 GB WD Scorpio Blue EIDE HD. (found
today for $99.99 at MicroCenter, a great resource for peripherals
(IMHO,) which has 21 stores across the country, and an online presence
at www.microcenter.com)

Can you suggest the wisest procedure for getting all of my data
(cloning? the present HD) onto the new drive?

I see some possibilities, but don't know the best way. I'm planning to
do a fresh update of my periodic TimeMachine backups onto a 500 GB
MyBook before I start anything.

Next, I'd like to know whether it's best to wait until after I've
installed the new HD, before (re-)formatting it and copying my data
over to it, or whether I should do that before touching my current,
apparently correctly functioning PowerBook.

Should I use Carbon Copy Cloner? I've never used Carbon Copy Cloner,
but I wonder if I can attach the new drive, before I install it, to my
PowerBook with either an external USB-IDE connector or install it in
an external USB 2.0 HDD enclosure, and use CCC to exactly duplicate
the contents of my present drive. If so, what options or preferences
should I select when doing this operation?

Or, should I try to use Migration Assistant to copy everything onto
the new drive? Does using Migration Assistant automatically include
formatting the new drive to Macintosh? Which Mac format should I
select? Can I do this before I install the new (blank) hard drive into
my PowerBook?

Or, should I use some other utility application other than Migration
Assistant, Carbon Copy Cloner or Time Machine?

Should I re-format the new drive in the external enclosure first with
Disk Utility?

Has anyone seen a comprehensive step-by-step set of instructions for
accomplishing this kind of a move?

I hope for some clear guidance for what seems it might become a
daunting task were I to make an inadvertent error in procedure.

Thanks for your help,
stanton
