Richard writes, <this might be kind of 'left field-ish', but do you have your finder preferences set to NOT show external hard drives on your desktop?>
No. <Or maybe the pref's were corrupted to work that way.> If they're corrupted, how would I recognize it? <Have you checked in Disk Utility whether it shows in there? Is there anything showing up on the firewire bus in System Profiler?> Yes. However, on the iBook, it does not show up in Disk Utility (though it does on the G4, where it appears on the desktop too). On both the iBook and Quicksilver, the FW drive shows up in System Profiler. < With the drive being a OWC unit, I would think it quite improbable that it's the firewire controller chips being 'funky' and mucking things up for you - I had a cheap flea-bay fw/usb housing that gave a g4 iBook & a g3 Blue&White fits once upon a time. (Same housing got along fairly well with my G4 MIni's FireWire though.) With your ibooks' Target Disk Mode functioning over the same firewire jacks in the G3 iBook, I lends credence to it not being a failed jack causing the issue - not 100% definitive, but quite indicative in my eyes. Quite the puzzle you're coping with, isn't it!> Yeah...sigh (now wait till I get to the CCC issue, but I'll probably have to post that on the G-List since it involves my Quicksilver!). Anyway, the exernal FW drive was brand new from OWC -- actually it's a brand new REPLACEMENT unit from the one I originally bought (also brand new). The original one had to be replaced because of the "bridge" being burned out (we smelled burning electronics). I didn't smell anything bad with this one. Well, any more sage advice? :-) Tnanks, ~Yersinia. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to Low End Mac's G-Books list, a group for those using G3 iBooks and PowerBooks (we run a separate list for G4 'Books).
