This is interesting - since I just in the past week bought a
SimpleTech ProDrive external firewire drive (1TB size) - it has
the exact same "Unit software version", "spec ID" and "firmware revision"
as the unit noted above, and I have had no problems with it so far
on my G4 mini.

One thing that might be of interest - you may look at how the drive is
partitioned - on PowerPC Macs I always use an Apple Partition Table
to set up the drive, newer drives come with the MBR type partition 
setup so they can be used as startup drives on Intel machines.
