Kris Tilford writes,

<I believe this is the new Oxford 934 chipset which seems to be have
problems with Macs. A lot of different brands are using this chipset
now, including OWC, Seagate FreeAgent Go, CoolDrives, NewerTech, etc.

Almost all seem to have the v.110 firmware, and all seem to have
mounting issues on Macs. Some are suggesting it's a sleep issue, where
the drive is waiting for some signal from the Mac that isn't coming.
Almost everyone says it is a firmware issue with the enclosure.

I noticed that some NewerTech enclosures seem to have newer firmware,
v.113 instead of v.110, but I don't see an update or firmware
available. I'm contacting someone in hopes of getting you a copy of
this newer firmware.>

Oh wow, didn't know about the chipset/firmware issue at all. Thanks! But
now this has me wondering if this possibility of a firmware problem is
the cause of the CCC/SuperDuper headaches with the this external HD and
my Quicksilver which have frustrated me all day today.

<To see articles Google either:

"0x10483 0x609E 0x110" WITHOUT QUOTES, or "0x10483 0x609E 0x113"

All articles are ONLY about problems on Macs, this problem doesn't
effect PCs.>

Thanks...I Googled these, but didn't find any helpful hits, sorry. The
stuff that came up dealt with different external HDs/Macs (and in one
case a different OS -- one article said "Leopard incompatibility" and
I'm running Tiger) from what I'm running, and nothing seemed similar to
my problems.

<This is less likely, but there also could be the issue with the
firmware of the HD itself. If the HD is a Seagate, many of the 500 GB
Seagate HDs were shipped with bad firmware. The complete list of HDs
shipped with bad firmware is below, I've marked the 500 GB with an
asterisk for you [snip]>

Thanks for the list -- but the OWC guy on the phone told me that the
drive itself is a Hitachi. In fact, I had asked him what kind of drive
was inside the enclosure when ordering the unit in the first place
because I'd heard about the bad Seagate 500 GB - 1.5 TB drives and
wanted to make sure I wasn't going to end up with one.

Well, Kris, thanks much.
