IMHO you might change PRAM battery or battery is close to death, if is 
working (i.e. when you unplug the main) but not enough power to 
start-up. But  first you might try to zap PRAM  [command+P+R on start-up 
before smiling Mac (or apple if you run OSX)]  three time in a row ...
