>From personal experience with the 6 or 8 Pismos (Pismi?) that I've
owned (400, 500, 550 G4), none have ever seemed more than slightly
warm to the touch from the outside, with all parts in place.  I think
the fan came on once with any heavy Photoshop usage.  I never touched
the heatsink (didn't seem like a good idea) or heatpipe.  Seems safer
to operate it with all parts installed.  My first Lombard (eBay) came
without the heatshield, and I promptly burned up the processor while
trouble shooting.
