Scott , if you go here to the XLR8 compatibility database
http://forums.xlr8yourmac.com/drivedb/search.drivedb.lasso
and just select drive type as Combo DVD-CDR and then scroll down and select 
Apple iBook you will get a list of drives people have tried and some of the 
workarounds.
I know you have a clamshell but on that database there is no clamshell category 
and the first gen iBooks are pretty close hardware wise.
Some of the comments are pertinent though.
"VLC doesn't require a rage128 or later graphics
chip like apple's DVD player does but if the OS was installed w/o a
compatible DVD drive (and graphics chip) the apple dvd pkg won't be
installed. (FAQ's DVD section has an old tip for that - using pacifist
to install the DVD pkg from the OS X install CD). Not sure that will
help but just a FYI... "
