As I had taken my Pismo apart recently, and this question is very
relevant to my computer, I decided to do a quick take-apart to verify
what is in mine. Note that when I took it apart, it had been on for a
couple of days, but asleep for probably half an hour. Of the hard
drive, Airport card, and shield over the CPU, the warmest to touch was
the Airport card.

My particular Pismo has the all-metal heatsink-heat pipe-heat dissipator
combination. There's also a metal heatsink-heat pipe-composite material
assembly that is in my 'parts' Pismo.

The metal heatsink that rests on top of the CPU had the grey residue. It
had an irregular surface, and looked like it wasn't capable of making a
good thermal contact with the CPU. I scraped that off with my favorite
tool (thumbnail) and got down to what looked like tape adhesive. I
cleaned that off with 'mineral spirits' (a.k.a. charcoal lighter) on a
cotton swab until I was down to bare metal. There was a little of the
grey stuff still on the copper-looking CPU chip surface. I also cleaned
that off until I got what looked like bare metal.

All I had on hand for thermal paste was some generic white heat sink
compound that came from Radio Shack. Better than none (and better than
what was there before). I used an amount that was probably less than
the volume of a grain of rice. I positioned the heat sink on the CPU,
then removed it to verify coverage. The amount I added was a tiny bit
more than needed. I cleaned it off, reapplied, and then reassembled. I
was careful to start the two torx screws over the CPU before the
Phillips that secures the heat dissipating end. I also carefully
screwed down the two torx screws, trying to make sure that I did not
overtighten one, on the theory that it could 'rock' the heat sink off
the CPU on one side (although I suppose the plastic tabs on either side
of the CPU where the screws go would minimize this).

Reassembled and back in business typing this note.
