On the iBook 500 MHz the lid switch is magnetic, it's a tiny coin type
magnet on the top of one of the screw holes that's covered by the
keyboard. I don't think it's likely the problem because the magnet
would have to come loose and get out of its hole and be stuck to the
surface to cause the iBook to think the lid was closed all the time.
You can remove the keyboard by turning the small screw in the upper
center and then sliding the two left & right upper sliders back while
lifting the top edge up and out. The magnet is just left of the serial
# sticker.

It seems possible the HD was perhaps damaged in the fall? I've heard
this happens, but I don't know the symptoms or a fix other than
replacement, which is hard on an iBook. You might try booting from and
external FW HD or CD to see if it boots normally? Perhaps this is not
possible? Reset the PRAM/NVRAM using Cmd-Opt-O-F and the commands:

set-defaults<Return>
reset-all<Return>

where <Return> means hit the Return key. The replies should be "OK" to
the 1st command and an automatic reboot to the 2nd command.
