Yes, downloading the flash file and using an alternate stand-alone player may be best on slower systems. As has been noted, the new Flash Player 10.1 beta is lower in CPU usage than older versions. Also, Vimeo and YouTube are both starting to support HTML5 video which on my slower Macs plays better than Flash, so look for the optional HTML5 stream that's starting to appear now.
