Has the clamshell taken a bad fall or been bumped into anything lately. I would think if you can't pick up anything, but the symbol is still there, that the antenna might have been damaged. However, I did have a problem one time with my Pismo where the antenna cable port had come part of the way out of the AirPort card. Have you checked out the card physically yet?
