Hardware decoding is always best. There is software decoding available in some applications, for example VLC. You'd play the disc in VLC by using the File>Open Disc... command. In an old G3 you'll probably have to use the VLC version 0.86i version. The G3 may not have enough horsepower to play it smoothly?
