OS X doesn't support the add-on hardware decoder cards used in the early G3's, but it does support hardware decoders incorporated into all Radeon video cards. So if you had a old Beige G3 with a video card with the add-on decoder you could gain a hardware decoder by installing a Radeon card. Unfortunately this option isn't available in the laptops. Strangely, I believe most PC Rage cards have hardware DVD decoder support, but for some reason the Rage cards in early G3s lack this support, and require that option add-in card that isn't supported in OS X.
