Kris was right.  I needed the older version of VLC to make it
"work" (. . . and, I use the term loosely).  I downloaded version
0.86i and it actually "played," which is more than I can say for
anything else I've tried.  Your were also right about the quality of
the play.  It was really herky-jerkey.  Not worth watching.  However,
it does seem to read DVD's just fine, so maybe this really is an
upgrade.  Right now I'm importing a CD into the iTunes music library,
and it is slower than Christmas (I've never seen anything import music
at speeds slower than real time!).  We'll see if it can burn a CD
tomorrow.  This has been quite an education and I love playing with
these old dinosaurs.  Thanks for everyone's input!

P.S. I checked the system profiler and it states that there are no OS
9 drivers installed for this model CD-ROM (Sony CD-RW CRX800E -
Revision 1.3r)
